An activist and nutrition expert, Dick Gregory, in his essay, Shame, talks about the dark life of a boy in school who is being discriminated because of his social class. Gregory's purpose is to demonstrate the hardship of poverty. Gregory achieve his purpose by employing the rhetorical devices negative diction, Pathos, and allusion.
In Gregory rhetorical analysis essay, Gregory demonstrates the hardship that kids who are in poverty had to go through during the mid 1900's. In his essay, he talks about a boy that is being treated unjustly by everyone around him including his teacher. His teacher thought he "...was stupid. Couldn't spell, couldn't read, couldn't do arithmetic. Just stupid." This shows how Gregory's teacher judged him in class everyday. With the description that was presented, it brings up a negative mood within the essay. Everyone sees the boy as an outcast, someone that does not belong in their school.
Gregory develops emotional feelings as well throughout the story. When Gregory was in school, he bragged about how his dad was going to give him "two dollars and fifty cents.", but in reality Gregory grew up without a dad. Everybody in Gregory class knew that, but he says it to make himself feel happy. The teacher in the passage called him out saying, "We know you don't have a Daddy." After getting called out by his teacher, Gregory showed emotional feeling by saying, "Then I couldn't see her too well because I was crying, too." This illustrates how the comment that was directed towards Gregory hurt him internally.
Gregory as a child has lived through many hardship. Being discriminated in class was just the beginning. Gregory uses allusion as a way to show his hardship as a child. In the passage, Shame, it stated, "And she had a Daddy, and he had a good job." This quote is utilizing allusion as a way to show how Gregory grew up without a dad and without a lot of money compared to other kids in his class.
Dick Gregory was not born rich as a child. He lived through poverty and discrimination because of his social status. The way Gregory was treated in school by his teacher was unjustly. Not only was he called out in front of the entire class, but he was also made fun of. Gregory was an outcast throughout his childhood education. Thus, Dick Gregory utilized his rhetorical devices throughout his essay to demonstrate the hardship of a different social class during the mid 1900's.

I really liked the writing style that you implemented when writing this essay because it was very organized went in chronological order. In addition I enjoyed the way you structured your sentences, and used the rhetorical devices in order of the way you listed them in the introduction.
